The Obituary Jose Andre Vives, born November 3, 1951 in New York, passed away on July 14, 2014 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Poncho, as he was affectionately called, began his formal education in New York, continuing on Long Island and graduated in June 1969 from Malverne High School. Whether you called him Poncho, Jose, Hobie or “Bubi”, his Mom’s pet name for him…he was always there. Jose’s dream, while spoken to few, was to run in the Penn Relays and one day the Olympics! While his dream was unfulfilled, he ran a great race throughout his life.

Poncho’s other passion was the water! Oh, how he loved the beach, be it…Jones Beach, Far Rockaway, Manhattan Beach, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Reese Beach, any beach on any tropical island, and his last home…Virginia Beach. There were a few nights, which turned into morning, the dawn of a new day on those same beaches.

Jose did attend college, SUNY at Oswego for a short while. Upon mutual agreement, like a marriage, the University and Jose determined they were not meant for each other and he returned to Long Island.

Poncho took a little while to find his professional calling. However, in that time, as he moved from the Nassau County Medical Center, to the Window Factory, to Fairchild Republic, he continued to form friendships that remain strong to this day. Poncho became “Hobie” at Fairchild Republic, where Mr. Shelley Stewart Sr. became his mentor. A special bond was formed, when Mr. Stewart, as he did throughout his life “adopted” another son. They are now reunited!

Being the son and stepson to law enforcement officers, his professional calling finally came to him as a Corrections Officer. He served proudly for more than twenty years, until a disability would not allow him to continue. As he struggled physically; his mind, wit and sense of humor remained sharp. While never in doubt, all you could do was chuckle with him, as he continued to be…Jose, Hobie and Poncho to all that knew and loved him.

Jose was a son to Shirley & Jose, Stepson to Joseph (Robbie), and brother to Eric, all deceased, with whom he will now reunite!

Jose is survived by: his wife Michelle and her son Chiedu to whom he was a father, Ex-wife Kandy, his late father’s wife Milagros, his brothers and sisters, Edward, Theodore, Joseph, Maryann, Jaclyn, Luther, Steven, Patrick and Darren, brothers and sisters-in-law, countless aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of devoted friends.

May Your Soul Rest in Peace!
Dear Lord…Please welcome your son home!

A PRAYER
I’m Free – Unknown
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I’ve found that peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My Life’s been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch,
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The family of Jose Vives wishes to express their deep appreciation for the many expressions of love, kindness and support shown to them since his passing through today and into the future.
